Settlin' back in

D and I had a great weekend in Nairobi. Had an awesome sushi dinner with friends on Friday, followed by dessert and coffee at one our favorite places in the Westlands (wealthier, expat area).

Saturday morning came VERY early after our night out. However, I was able to convince Damian to get out of bed so we could get some good sites in at the Nairobi National Park. Got a smidge lost on the way, all part of the fun. Rolled up to the Park around 7:45am. IT WAS AWESOME. It is this huge, natural landscape park in the middle of Nairobi. It's like a mini Masai Mara game park. As you can see from the pictures, getting up early really paid off. We stalked a male lion for about 45 minutes. Amazing, though freaky as shit. We are rolling through the park, one-lane road, windows on the car down. "Lion. MALE LION," Damian screamed. It was literally 4 feet outside his window-huge head right there, starring at him!


After the game park we went to the animal orphanage. Again, AWESOME. We really only went for on unofficial reason: to pet the Cheetahs. So, a little Damain smoozing later, the guy took us into the pens and starting snapping pictures. After 5 minutes of pure bliss (and a little biting and scratching) we paid our bribe and went on our way.

By this time we were starving...went to Carnivore's (super famous meat-game Brazilian type restaurant) Simba Salon. Sat outside, had a Tusker and ate some meat (yes, even me).

Got lost in the middle of nowhere rural Karen/NBO outskirts. Damian need a little courage to drive through a puddlde. A PUDDLE!!!! Got through it, phew. Never got to the Kitengela glass factory despite the 30+ minute drive and super trek in the mud. Oh well, we'll try again with friends.

Covered in mud we went to the Kenyan-Walmart for some groceries, bought some burned DVD's off a street vendor (and a scarf for $1.50), then headed home for a good bottle of wine (courtesy of my one-eyed father) and a home cooked meal. Nice.
